The Maldives have their own script, named Thaana. Thaana is written from right to left. Somebody said to me, it would look like short spaghetti. Similar to the scripts of the neighbouring countries, the vowels are over and beneath the consonants, so that you will read syllable by syllable. Once there had been an effort to replace Thaana by latin script, but this would noch last for long. There aren't even rules for writing Maldivian in latin script, at least no rules that would be accepted by everybody. Here's the first sentence again, written in Thaana: ތެ މަލްޑީވްސް ހޭވް ތޭރް އޯން ސްކްރިޕްޓް Meanwhile Thaana is established in Windows and Word – other programs have their difficulties with Thaana, alas, and so do still some mobile phones.

The grammar is quite similar to the singhalese grammar (Sri Lanka), whereas the consonants are nearer to the european languages than to the languages of the neighbouring countries. There is not much scientific research on this language, there are no books to teach the language, and so, there are only few people who know to speak Dhivehi
