Pray for Maldives

Here you will find daily informations with prayer items.

As the Maldives are situated inmidst of the ocean, many people are living from fisheries. The sea is providing a wide range of seafood. The Maldivian kitchen is mainly based on tuna.

Since the middle of the nineties there are also Maldivian christians – in Maldives. Their actual number is unknown, because they are hidden. For sure, they are a very small minority. They are under highest pressure, they are not allowed to meet, usually they have no bible, and for sure, it is a high risk for them to let others know that they are christians. Nevertheless, they are quite active in Christ.

Since about 850 years, Maldives are a muslim nation. They are proud to be the only 100% muslim nation of the world. From their point of view, islam is the guarantee for the national unity and social peace of the Maldives. Constitution and law are supposed not to contradict to islamic sharia. In contrary to other muslim nations, the Maldivian tradition was quite moderate, e.g. most of the women haven't been veiled – until the tsunami of 2004.

Let's pray:

The Maldives have their own script, named Thaana. Thaana is written from right to left. Somebody said to me, it would look like short spaghetti. Similar to the scripts of the neighbouring countries, the vowels are over and beneath the consonants, so that you will read syllable by syllable. Once there had been an effort to replace Thaana by latin script, but this would noch last for long. There aren't even rules for writing Maldivian in latin script, at least no rules that would be accepted by everybody. Here's the first sentence again, written in Thaana: ތެ މަލްޑީވްސް ހޭވް ތޭރް އޯން ސްކްރިޕްޓް Meanwhile Thaana is established in Windows and Word – other programs have their difficulties with Thaana, alas, and so do still some mobile phones.

Let's pray:

The Maldivians have their own language, called Dhivehi. The grammar is quite similar to the singhalese grammar (Sri Lanka), whereas the consonants are nearer to the european languages than to the languages of the neighbouring countries. There is not much scientific research on this language, there are no books to teach the language, and so, there are only few people who know to speak Dhivehi

Let's pray:

The Maldivians are a very old nation, that has its roots in many nations. You will find indian, tamil, african, and arabian influence. The Maldivians call themselves "Dhivehin", and their country "Dhivehi Raajje". For more than 2000 years, the Dhivehin have diplomatic contacts zu many nations. The islands gave their culture to the Dhivehin.

Let's pray:

In other countries, Maldives are famous for wonderful tourist resort islands. From the very beginnings up to these days, tourists appreciate to be far away from their daily troubles in a pittoresc nature, spending their holidays in a place they will never forget.

Let's pray:

Did you know, that "atoll" is a maldivian word? It means a reef in the form of a ring, with islands on it, and a often very colourful lagoon in its midst. The Maldives are dividing their nation according to the atolls in 22 regions with regional Councils and an "katheebu" which means the governor of the atoll.

Maldives, these are about 1200 islands on the back of a huge coral reef. About 200 of these islands are inhabited by 360 000 Maldivians, about 90 islands are established as tourist resorts. Maldives are one of the least reached nations: there are less than 1% christians, only some of the books of the Bible are translated into Maldivian, and it is impossible to bring printed bibles on the islands.
